Special Olympics Programs

What/Where:  Public Tennis partners with SOAR Special Recreation, Special Olympics SC, and Beaufort County Disabilities and Special Needs to bring tennis programs to adults at two public parks and to children at nine public schools in greater Beaufort/Jasper County (referred to as SpecialOlympics SC “Area 8”). The public parks for adult programs are Chaplin Park on Hilton Head and the downtown courts in Beaufort. The schools included in our Special Olympics program are as follows: Hilton Head High School, Hilton Head Middle School, Bluffton High School, McCracken Middle School, May River High School, Beaufort High School, Battery Creek High School, Whale Branch Early Technical College, and Hardeeville School. In the past year, we coached nearly 200 athletes at these programs with 70 volunteer coaches participating!

When:  Youth clinics at the schools are offered six weeks in the fall school semester and six weeks in the spring school semester. Adult clinics and competition events are seasonal. Yearly adult competition includes the Bandana Tournament in Charleston, the September Slammer state tournament in Columbia, and the Special Olympics North America (SONA) “nationals” in October here on Hilton Head Island.
