About Public Tennis Inc. (PTI)

Public Tennis Inc. (PTI) is a group of volunteers and teaching pros who use our passion for our favorite sport to help kids and adults learn and get in the game. We see tennis as a community sport, learned and played at public facilities. Like the founders of our 501(c)(3) nonprofit over 20 years ago who coordinated with the Town of Hilton Head to build Chaplin Park, we’re committed to affordable, accessible tennis for all. Our work truly “reaches out”, serving many who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience tennis, to learn and to play.

Counting volunteers, teen apprentices, and teaching pros, we are approximately 85 coaches in total!  This past year, we introduced tennis to approximately 600 youngsters at 6 elementary and middle schools, we taught 60 children in summer camps, we coached 186 children at “Parks & Rec” clinics at public parks, and we coached nearly 200 adaptive (mostly Special Olympics) youth and adult athletes, 7 of whom competed at Special Olympics Nationals.

To deliver programs, we partner with Hilton Head Island Recreation, Beaufort County Parks & Recreation, SOAR Special Recreation, Special Olympics, and the school districts of Beaufort County and Jasper County. We work at 2 public parks and with 10 public schools.

We are funded by local events, local sponsors, grants, and generous donations. We are a USTA Community Tennis Association and a USTA Foundation NJTL (National Junior Tennis and Learning) Chapter, bringing the benefits of our shared values and resources to our service area.
